Top 10 Love Songs for the Romantic at Heart
91
Romantic songs transport us through time. They carry us back to our youth when we (who are over 30) listened to the radio. They carry us on a breeze to our first crush. They take us to that nervous excitement before our first date. A love song can make us remember our first love with fondness, the feeling of new love washing over us. A song can make our heart melt remembering an unrequited or lost love. A favorite melody can transport us in time to the beginning of a relationship that is still growing. There is always that one song that still makes our heart skip a beat, no matter what or whom it connects us to in our reminiscence. Below is must have music for your love song playlist.
"If" by Bread
Having older brothers and sisters, I was always in tune to the pop music of the day. When I was a little girl in the early 70's, I listened to Bread and their many hits. "If" was the most romantic song. One could only dream of having someone love you so much.
"I Need You" by Lynyrd Skynrd
When we think of Lynyrd Skynyrd, we typically think good ole boy Southern Rock. We don't think of love songs. When my husband and I were dating in the early 80's, Skynyrd was a favorite among our group of friends and still is a favorite to many of today's teens. They are timeless. "I Need You" on their most famous Second Helping album became a favorite for me and my husband in those early years and still elicits a kiss when we hear it today.
"Open Arms" by Journey
Little did I know when we chose Journey's "Open Arms" to be our song those many years ago that its words would ring true to my life with my husband 30 years later. We chose it when he went through basic training in '82, and the romantic notion was that I would wait for him with "Open Arms" to return to me. Through the years and his military career, the song tells the story of him leaving and returning and of me waiting and welcoming him with "Open Arms." It was one of our wedding songs and still moves us when we hear it.
"Truly" by Lionel Richie
Lionel Richie was the king of romantic songs in the 80's. "Truly" was another of our wedding songs. What girl does not want to hear from her guy that he is "Truly in love with you, girl... I need you, and with your love I'm free..."? Makes my heart skip a beat to this day.
"I Can't Fight This Feeling" by REO Speedwagon
As far as I am concerned, REO Speedwagon was the bomb during my teen years. They were my first concert, and I have seen them 8 more times and will again if presented the opportunity. Kevin Cronin singing "I can't this feeling any longer, and yet I'm still afraid to let it show. What started out as friendship has grown stronger..." is the essence of many couples' beginnings.
"Wonderful Tonight" by Eric Clapton
Eric Clapton's "Wonderful Tonight" expresses a mature love. The couple knows and deeply understands each other. They are getting ready for an evening out, and he tells her that she looks "Wonderful Tonight." Exactly what a woman needs to hear in order to know she still attracts his emotional and physical love. He says, "I feel wonderful/Because I see the love light in your eyes..." showing that the love is mutual. He has too many drinks, and she gets him home, puts him to bed, and he turns to her and says, "I say my darling, you were wonderful tonight." The song shows how love grows and comprehends the challenges but embraces them.
"The Song Remembers When" by Trisha Yearwood
After many years in a relationship, sometimes a song is needed to take us back to special feelings we had in a new love. We can transfer those feelings to the love in our life or cherish a memory of a love in the past. In Trisha Yearwood's "The Song Remembers When," she draws these feeling out when she sing "... standing at the counter/I was waiting for the change/ When I hear that old familiar music start..." Even though it was long ago and knowing she can't go back, she cannot stop the memories flooding into her heart and mind.
"One More Day" by Diamond Rio
Diamond Rio's "One More Day" expresses loss. It may have been a love loss due to going separate ways or a love loss due to death. I chose this love song because there are many people who have lost loved ones in Iraq, Afghanistan, and many other war zones that the average person may not know about. Being a military wife and my husband having served two tours in Iraq's most dangerous areas, I thought of the "what ifs" when he was gone. It is not something you can stop by being positive. It is with you every second of every day when you have a loved one in a war zone. I was fortunate, and this song is for those who lost a loved one and to the soldier, sailor, or Marine who sacrificed all for our freedoms. Thank you.
"I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing" by Aerosmith
I admit it, I am in love with Aerosmith's Steven Tyler. My husband knows and understands - he's a swell guy. One of our favorite movies is Armageddon. Actually, it was one of my favorite movies until we had to watch it at least once a month. I figured out that my husband has an unrequited love for Liv Tyler... Hmmm... I guess I am big enough to understand. Aerosmith's "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing" was also a song I listened to many times when my husband was in Iraq. It expresses a deep love that does not want to miss a moment. I am still waiting for my call from Steven Tyler to ask me to sing "I Don't Wanna Miss a Thing" in a duet with him (while he looks at me longingly, of course...). It could happen!
"Still the One" by The Orleans
After being married for a long time, "Still the One" by the Orleans expresses the roller coaster of emotions that go along with a long term relationship. "Sometimes I never wanna see you again/But I want you to know/After all these years/You're still the one/I want whisperin' in my ear..." That about sums it up. My husband and I smile every time we hear this song, and sometimes he grabs me and swirls me around in a little dance in the the kitchen. He's "Still the One."

I truly love these love songs! One More Day is my favorite followed by I Don't Wanna Miss A Thing and Wonderful Tonight! Nice work Susan!:)
Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton is my best love song in your list. By the way Eric Clapton also happens to be one of my favorite singers.
I gave you all the votes on this one. Love the songs from the 80's! And "If" by Bread is awesome. I actually played that on the piano at age 15 for my mom's wedding. :-) I love Steven Tyler; I hope you get that call to sing with him. And I also love the image of your husband grabbing you in the kitchen and swirling you around the room. Well done!
What about "if your not the one" by Daniel bedingfield, I love that one.
Excellent selection Susan! You took us back to our early 80's. You are getting some people on the mood! Thanks for taking your time in putting together this hub!
LORD
Great list of songs. I love em all. I do prefer to hear Stan Fletcher sing One More Day however :)but that's only because I'm a big fan of his.
i think you really hit the mark with "Still the One" and "Wonderful Tonight". It's impossible to argue those choices, but did you consider "Love Song" by The Cure? That one, to me, is crucial for this kind of list
I love them all...Two of my favorites, Skynrd and REO..You did a fantastic job putting this together..Thank you..
I totally agree with you, those songs are great, specially Wonderful tonight from Erick Clapton, that brings me back to wonderful memories I had. Thank you for sharing.
Hey these are some great ones sholland. How about 'I'm in You' by Peter Frampton, 'Lady Blue' by Leon Russell, and 'Forever and for Always' by Shania Twain.
Great hubs and songs friend. One more day is the best to me though..but ALL great songs....when music was good. I may have to do some slow dancing with my baby tonight after I make dinner for us....Thanks!!
Great list of love songs! Open Arms has to be my favorite though. Great hub, voted up!
Great hub Sholland! I love all of Lionel Ritchey's (and the Commodores)songs. Truley is great. This is such a lovely and beautiful hub!
Great hub Sholland! I love all these, there was one or two I hadn't heard. My favourite is I Need You" by Lynyrd Skynrd
This is such a lovely hub thank you for sharing
Ironically, I love music and some of the songs on your list here don't even ring a bell in my head. LOL! Don't worry, I'm not surprised, my love of music is somewhat limited. However, even with that said, I listen to anything except three types- classical, country and opera. Otherwise, my music taste is wide open. And before you even say anything about me not liking "Country", there are some artists I don't mind listening to, but have to be in the mood. Good hub. :) Voted up! :)
Okay, now you're calling me too young for some of these songs? LOL! LOL! LOL! How old do you think I am? Never mind, don't answer that. I am presently 43, born in 68 and am familiar with most of the songs, there's just a couple that I've not heard of. :P Like I said, "some" just don't ring a bell in my head. I could probably listen to them and then recall them. :P And, you're welcome. :)
Great Choices! I linked this to my page - all things Valentine:) Thanks - I loved the little trip down memory lane - I used to love Lionel Ritchie!! Oh and what about Billy Joel? He had some really smooth ones too:) Bet it was hard for you to pick!
Hello, I didn't know the name of some of these songs that I enjoyed. Thanks for putting this together and adding the videos. Well done.
Thanks for adding all the links! Made for a great playlist :)
lol, you should do a new post on Valentine's Day songs!
I like Justin Bieber's songs specially O Baby
i like ur hubs. Well written and ur article presentation .... Simply wow!! Voted up and share also.. Waiting 4 ur next one
My favorite song on this list is "Open Arms," but I think that's mainly because I know the Mariah Carey cover. The next best would be Clapton.
What I meant was that I am more familiar with Mariah Carey's cover of the song, and I prefer it to then the original. However, whoever in the band wrote the lyrics is an amazing song writer.
OMG - I can't chose between Open Arms, REO Speedwagon (one of my mom's favorites) Wonderful tonight or I don't wanna miss a thing. I obviously know these songs... but for me they don't particularly remind me of a time... however I have a few that do and it is always fun to take a trip down memory lane when they come on. The first one that comes to mind - Lady in Red and Take my Breath Away... thanks for the trip!
The only good one is Wonderful Tonight. It's really hard to find songs good enough for my baby.
Beautiful selection!

This is a great hub. I'm not familiar with all of the songs but my two favorites have to be Open Arms and Can't Fight this Feeling. I especially love how Steve Perry belts it out. Awesome job!
